Mercedes-Benz. The manufacturer is famous for not outsourcing the car assembly, but up to now it has assembly plants only in Germany, vouching for classic German quality. If you ever wanted to pay a visit to Africa, the most popular cars you would see in deep African countries are used Mercedes vehicles. Sometimes over thirty, or even fifty-year-old ones, with a coverage sometimes over 1 million miles. Okay, they might not meet your requirements but the mere fact tells loads of Mercedes quality, sturdiness and endurance.
Of course, buying a used Mercedes have its issues as well. Being the single oldest car brand in the world, older models have their issues, but some circumspection will go a long way.
First, a used Mercedes with an engine of about 2 litres (petrol) or 2.2 (diesel) will provide you with enough power, and they are reasonably upkeepable, and have affordable fuel economy. Do not look for a handbrake between the front seats. They are foot-operated, and have been so for a long time now. If you don’t want to buy a huge S-Klasse with a big block but something to travel with, it seems the best choice (also, the electric cabling of a big-blocked used Mercedes S-Klasse most likely half-melted by now due to the excess heat coming from the engine resulting in unexplicable electric malfunctions). They were usually shipped with automatic transmission. They are smooth and easy to get used to, why not choose that? Older baseline models are usually insufficiently equipped, so instead of the ones marked Classic, you should go for Elegance, Avantgarde or even Sport (make no mistake, Sport does not necessarily mean that those cars are actually sporty. Apart from a select few, Mercedes models are typically not sporty).
If you care for extremely old models (like the Ponton aged about forty-fifty years), be noted that due to the extremely particular assembly, old used Mercedes cars are likely to be attacked by rust, mainly near the front door hinges. Extremely long lifetime and the lack of rust protection that long ago will do it’s work. You cannot do too much against it, all you can do is prepare for replacing the part which is inevitable.
Which brings us to the most important part of buying a used Mercedes. Mercedes provides used car owners with a second-to-none spare part service. Of course, in the case of a very old model, the prices may be a little too much, but the fact that the manufacturer cares for its clients after so much time is almost unique, and contributes to the feeling that used Mercedes models are extremely reliable. Emailing a dealership will result in quick answers, and they are ready to ship the part you need to your house.
Should that prove too expensive, international auction sites offer a wide range of second-hand spare parts, as well. So, to each his own, if you have a used Mercedes, you will get your spare part one way or the other.
All in all, buying a used Mercedes model might be one of the best choices to go for. On the one hand, maintaining a used Mercedes is easy… or at least is not inhibited by the lack of spare parts, and on the other hand, there is no other way to feel the luxury this manufacturer provided their clients with in times past.
Although many older
used Mercedes cars are affected by rust and other problems, they are one of the most popular make in the 2nd hand car market. The vehicles of the newer generations are often problem-free, that’s why they are so popular among car buyers.
